Leonardo da Vinci's The Vitruvian Man (circa 1490) is a detailed study of human proportions, based on the writings of the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. The drawing depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions, with arms and legs extended within a circle and a square. This geometric arrangement is a visual exploration of the ideal human form, illustrating how the body fits into mathematically perfect shapes. Each limb's precise positioning reflects da Vinci’s study of anatomy and his belief in the harmony between the human body and the universe. Accompanying the figure are notes written in da Vinci's distinctive mirror script, which delve into the proportional relationships he observed, such as the height being roughly equal to the span of outstretched arms. The work stands as a testament to the Renaissance ideal of fusing art, science, and nature in the pursuit of knowledge and beauty.
