Edgar Degas’s The Ballet Scene from Meyerbeer’s Opera (1876) captures a moment from Robert le Diable, an opera by Giacomo Meyerbeer, in which ghostly nuns rise from their graves to perform a ballet. The painting centers on a group of ballerinas dressed in flowing white tutus, their delicate forms bathed in the soft glow of stage lighting. Degas frames the dancers mid-performance, with their graceful poses contrasted against the dark, shadowy backdrop of the stage. The composition is asymmetrical, giving a sense of immediacy and movement, as if the viewer is catching a fleeting glimpse of the action from the wings. Degas’s attention to the play of light and shadow, as well as his emphasis on the dancers’ elegant lines and fluidity, reflects his fascination with the world of the ballet and the ephemeral nature of performance.
