L'Allee des Alyscamps, painted by Paul Gauguin in 1888, portrays a tree-lined path at the ancient Roman necropolis in Arles, France. The scene is bathed in warm autumn colors, with vibrant yellows, oranges, and reds dominating the trees and ground. Three figures walk along the path, their simplified forms contributing to the sense of flattened perspective and stylistic abstraction. Gauguin's use of bold, unblended colors and flattened planes reflects his move away from naturalism toward a more symbolic and expressive style. This painting was created during Gauguin's stay in Arles with Vincent van Gogh, who also painted the same location, showcasing their differing approaches to color and form.
