Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe
Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe
Édouard Manet's Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (1863) portrays an unconventional scene of a picnic in which a nude woman casually sits among two fully clothed men in a wooded setting. The woman's direct gaze toward the viewer breaks with traditional depictions of female nudity, where women are typically passive subjects. Nearby, another woman, partially dressed, bathes in a stream, her scale seemingly distorted against the backdrop. The men, dressed in modern attire, are engaged in conversation, seemingly indifferent to the nudity. The stark contrast between the figures and the verdant landscape, coupled with the nonchalant posture of the nude woman, challenged the norms of academic art, marking a shift toward modernity in its bold realism and ambiguous narrative.
